"The Inventor Crazybrains and his Wonderful Airship"
(Le Dirigeable Fantastique ou le Cauchemar d'un Inventeur)
A Jules Verne-like flying airship soars the skies with floating mermaids before out of control fireworks put an end to the crazy inventor's dreams. Unlike the Technicolor wonders that would come decades later, this Georges Méliès film from 1905 achieved its color the old-fashioned way; they were painted on the film by hand.

Another example of Melies` artistic flair
Yet another example of the artistry of the first genius auteur. The hand colouring in this film is vertiginously sublime, conveying the fervid and troubled/hubristic dreams of the inventor. The mermaid like figures are tantalising and infuriating for the inventor, rendering this film susceptible to a complex Freudian reading of its semiosis.

This great little short worked out perfectly with Diane Marie Kloba's "Dirigible" as backing music. It's posted here: http://youtu.be/Q33dnRZ99Gg
